The American Dental Association (ADA) recognizes nine types of dental specialists, each requiring board certification or eligibility to practice. The specialists include orthodontists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, pediatric dentists, periodontists, prosthodontists, endodontists, public-health dentists, oral pathologists, and oral and maxillofacial radiologists.

Unknown to many dental patients, aesthetic and cosmetic dentistry, arguably the fastest growing subset of dentistry today, is not recognized by the ADA as a separate dental specialty.  This area of dentistry falls within the scope of prosthodontics, the specialty comprised of doctors who have undergone rigorous training in restoring, replacing and shaping teeth, and just importantly, treating the entire mouth to insure that the results will last a lifetime.  Prosthodontists literally bring smiles to millions of patients worldwide.

To receive specialty certification from the ADA, prosthodontist candidates must complete four years of dental school, followed by an additional three years of training in a graduate education program of prosthodontics accredited by the ADA, as well as completing the necessary requirements to earn a Master of Science [M.S.] degree.

Requiring yet more training, a maxillofacial prosthodontist provides true cosmetic dentistry solutions. Maxillofacial prosthodontists are experts in cosmetic and restorative dentistry, as well as in complex prosthetic oral and facial reconstruction.  They are the only specialists trained to manage those who require, or have previously had, treatment for head and neck cancer.  Maxillofacial prosthodontists are also trained to properly manage patients with acquired or congenital defects of the mouth or face, such as those resulting from cleft palate or trauma.

Because of their superior training and experience, maxillofacial prosthodontists tend to receive patient referrals from physicians and other dentists who understand the benefits of being treated by a qualified dental specialist.
